One Thing

Mark 10:17-22 HCSB  As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  (18)  “Why do you call Me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good but One–God.  (19)  You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.”  (20)  He said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these from my youth.”  (21)  Then, looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “You lack one thing: Go, sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.”  (22)  But he was stunned at this demand, and he went away grieving, because he had many possessions.

This is a sad story recorded for us in Scripture.  The rich young ruler came to Jesus, asking Him what he needed to do to inherit eternal life.  Jesus told him he needed to keep the commandments.  The young man immediately stated that he had kept all of the commandments since his youth.  Jesus told him that he lacked one thing.  The one thing he lacked was making a full surrender to the Lord of his possessions.

Ask yourself this question:  “Is there even one thing in my life that will keep me from being 100% in the center of God’s will?”

  • One thing that takes too much of my time?  This might be a love for sports, a love for television and movies, a love for shopping, or a love for reading books, even good books!
  • One thing that requires too much of God’s money?  Maybe it is a love for vacations, cruises, expensive clothes, a large house or expensive cars.  None of these are wrong…but there might just be one thing that God’s want you to stop spending His money on.
  • One thing that will hinder God from working out His perfect will in my life?  Maybe it is one kind of clothing, or one thing you do to adorn yourself?  Maybe you turned your back on doing what God wants you to do with your life.  Perhaps you make it a habit of cheating on your income tax…justifying your actions because “the government is corrupt and doesn’t need God’s money!”

It doesn’t matter at all what the one thing is…it is only one thing that will:

  • Keep us from spending eternity in heaven with God.
  • Keep us from making the most of our life here on earth.
  • Keep us from being in the center of God’s will.

What do we need to do?  Let’s follow the advice of Jesus in this passage:

  • Go – God requires total obedience to His Word.
  • Sell – We must be willing to make a full surrender of everything we have to God.  This includes our money, possessions, family, talents, and time.
  • Give – We must have a spirit of giving in our life.  We must be willing to share with others from the abundance of what God has blessed us to be stewards over.
  • Follow – We must be willing to follow Jesus.  We will follow where He leads.

Will you walk away from Jesus…and be “stunned at this demand?”  Or, will you make a full surrender, take up your cross, and follow Jesus all the way?  This man wasn’t willing to do what Jesus demanded…ARE YOU?
